Technique Gone Wrong or... a HAPPY ACCIDENT!

We all know that phrase, “Happy Accident.” 
As crafters we use it often to describe a project or technique that we attempted, but, it did not go as planned. Well, today, we are going to explore what became my “happy accident.”
This past weekend, with coffee in hand, I entered my studio, determined to learn this technique I saw online.
I felt pretty confident. I had watched all the videos and read about the supplies used…

I got this, yes! …Ummm, No. First try I quickly realized I had to have a Dye Ink Pad. Then the second, third fourth… what am I missing!? Maybe a different paper? Nope. I am back to the drawing board on the original technique I was trying to learn, but I am here today to show you the “Happy Accident” technique that I stumbled upon.

Are you ready to play? Let's go! 

You want to ink up your Gel Press with Dye Ink and a Brayer. Sounds simple, right? I forgot to mention, this little “happy accident” is quite simple, but yet has endless possibilities.

Now, you want to dip your paint brush into your watercolors and Splatter the Gel Press. I used Primary Elements and also just basic watercolors. I will be playing around with other mediums and encourage you do to! ...and let me know how it goes!

Primary Elements Colors Used: Azurite, Forest Green, Mulberry, Wintermist Grey

Before I got started I mixed the Primary Elements Pigment Powders with The Solution. I ended up also doing another row of water than I mixed the main mix in just using my paintbrush. (...I am telling you, I really was approaching this like a science experiment!)

With my paper laid down, I flipped over the Gel Press and laid it on top of my paper, and then smooshed it down. 

Doesn't that just look cool!? This is the point I got super excited to unveil this masterpiece I have created using this new technique! ...and this is also where I realized that it was a 

"Happy Accident."

(This is not how it was supposed to look per the technique I was trying to learn, but I love how it does look!)

Now it is time to get inky with the Distress Inks!

Ink the edges of your card. I used Weathered Wood. 

Then place a circle stencil down for your moon and ink it up! (I cut mine out with my Silhouette Cameo and stencil paper so I can use over and over again).

Using Fossilized Amber I inked in the circle to create my moon. 

Then rip up a piece of paper and lay it down as a mask and then use Distress Ink to ink up everything below that line. Here I am using Peeled Paint.

 

Now time to Stamp!

Using the Silhouette Style Bare Tree from Blank Page Muse, I stamped my tree. 

Here is the same technique using different colors and also adding a little more spooky to it! (I am completely afraid of spiders, so I felt very proud of myself for using this creepy guy!)

How to dress up your Die Cuts

Hi Chris here and today I am sharing this tag I created using some these amazing die cuts from Sin City Stamps.

Supplies needed for this project include:
Sin City Stamps Supplies
Anime Fairies 2 Stamp Set
Pattern 2 Stencil 
Around the House Die Cuts
Light Pink Sheer Ribbon
Mixed Flatback Embellishments (little flower)

Other Supplies: Pacon Mixed  Media Paper, Tim Holtz Sizzix #8 Tag, Tim Holtz Distress Ink- Victorian Velvet, Core'dinations Tim Holtz Card Stock, Liquid Pearls, Gesso, Gold Sharpie, Pebbles-accent greeting, ColourArte-Twinkling H2Os - Black Cherry, Beacon Fabric Tac, Toule Netting










After die cutting my tag from the mixed media paper, I gently inked my tag using my Pattern 2 Stencil .















I then stamped over the stencil using my Anime Fairies 2 Stamp Set. I then matted my tag on cardstock and set aside while I dressed up my die cut.

When I started, my background of the die cut was blue like this 

I added Gesso to the blue die cut to make the chair white.  I then added a color wash using ColourArte-Twinkling H2Os - Black Cherry.  After drying,  I  added the overlay.  

To dress up the die cut even more I added some "rivets" on the arm of my chair using a gold sharpie.  I then added some "buttons" to the chair back using liquid pearls.  

I then added my chair to my tag and topped my tag off with a double bow (a smaller bow placed on top of the larger netting bow), and added a Mixed Flatback Embellishments (little flower) on top of the double bow. I added a sticker quick greeting and viola!  all done. 

How to create a Planner Pocket Page using product packaging and Sin City Stamps

Chris here and today I am sharing this calendar insert I created to hold some of my stickers and embellishments for my Create 365 planner (which I am using as my daily inspiration and make me smile planner:D ).  This is what it looks like in my planner.

To create this project I used:

package insert from Create 365 Calender sticky pads

 I started with the package insert and cut a piece of Kraft paper to use as my pocket.

 I then covered each piece with Gesso. When they were dry I flipped the package insert over and covered the back side with Gesso.  As you can see below my gesso stuck a bit to my surface but I left the rough look for some extra texture.

I then stamped my Fairies and Blossoms 1 & 2 images onto the envelope portion of my project.  I love these huge fairy flowers. I did use my galaxy marker to color in any portions of stamps that did stamp evenly on my rough surface.

I then used the backing from my cushion stamp to mask of the Blossom and used my Twinkling H2Os to color the background. The diagonal line is my planned cutting line for my envelope. 

 I then used my Copics and Spectrum Noir pens to color in my images and then trimmed my envelope.

 I then started on the background and started adding splatters and a color wash of Twinkling H20s

When I was satisfied with my background I stamped some more Fairies and Blossoms images and colored my images with my Copics. 

I then attached my envelop top with 2 sided tape and viola! I have a custom made inspirational pocket folder for my Planner!

SPLATTER FLOWERS

Hello and thank you for visiting today!!  I have a super fun project to share with you!  I call it "Splatter Flowers"!

SUPPLIES:

• Sin City Stamps "Big Bold Blossoms" by Daniella Hayes
• Sin City Stamps "Seashells" Stencil
• ColourArte Twinkling H2O's
• Stewart Superior India Ink Black
• Watercolor Paper
• Molding Paste

I started by covering the page with shell stencils and molding paste.  When it was dry I started splattering my colors.  I started with yellow Twinkling H2O's and let them dry.  I moved on to a light green and let it dry.  Then, I made concentrated areas of color on 4 sections of the paper.  I used 2 shades of blue, pink and purple.  I stenciled first so the colors would flow unevenly and mix together in fun and interesting ways!

The bottom left was too much on the stencil and I didn't like how it looked.  So the other 3 areas were not concentrated on a whole stencil.  I made sure that it was only on the edge or side of a stenciled shell, leaving white areas inside.  I LOVE how they look!  I cut the 4 sections apart so they were card sized and stamped a flower on each.

WOW I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!  I actually thought I would like this flower least because the leaves wouldn't be green but I was so wrong!!  I like this one best!  The abstract look is fabulous, the texture from the stencil is amazing and the splatter is awesome!!

My second favorite is the blue flower.  Actually, I love this one too!!  So hard to pick just one!!  This is my new favorite effect to make.  I know it will be used on art journal pages, canvases and more cards.  I hope I find tons of other uses for this effect because it is not only beautiful, it is sooo fun to do!  Splattering is always fun, isn't it???

Follow Your Dreams Art Journal Page

Hey everyone!  I hope you are enjoying your weekend.  Today, I am going to continue with adding pages to a mini album/journal I made last month.  You can see more about that with complete directions for making the album by clicking here. 

I am loving learning more and more about combining my stamps from Sin City Stamps and mixed media, so I wanted to share with you my first page I am going to add to my album.  The pages are made from a nice, thick card stock that is printed on one side only.  So, I will be working on the print side of one and gluing it to the wrong (white) side of the previous page.

Supplies Used:

Sin City Stamps:  Terri Sproul's Wish stamp set; Sparkle Stencil by Terri Sproul
ColourArte:  Twinkling H20s - Sky Blue, Orange Peel, Sweet Lavender, Sunflower

Prima 12x12 Script Pad
Chocolate ink pad ((Ancient Page)
Texture Paste (Ranger)
Glue n Seal (Ranger)
Liquid Pearls: Platinum, Peacock (Ranger)

Directions:

Trim card stock to 4-1/2" by 8-1/4".  Cover with a very light coat of clear gesso and let dry.  This will help seal the card stock and allow the paint to work much better, but will not obliterate any of the printed images on it.  Round the corners on the left side of the page, because this will be adhered to the back of the inside page in the book.

Spread texture paste through the sparkle stencil, leaving the edges uneven.  Scrape tiny patches of texture paste with a spatula around page for a cool effect.  Let everything dry.

 

Stamp three butterflies and two sentiments onto a piece of deli paper with the Chocolate ink pad.

Prepare your Twinks by spritzing some water 2-3 times into each pot to activate the colors.  Add all four colors to the background, misting with water and allowing the colors to run and blend.  Let dry.

Tear deli paper close to each stamped image and adhere to the background with a good adhesive medium, like Glue N Seal.  The deli paper disappears into the background, and gives you crisp, stamped images even over the stenciled paste.

Stamp some dandelions in the open spaces at the bottom of the paper with the Chocolate ink pad.

Color the butterflies with the four Twinks colors, mixing them to your liking.

Make bodies for the butterflies with the Peacock Liquid Pearls.

Add dots of Platinum Liquid Pearls to the dandelions.  

This is the book from my previous post.  The inside cover page is what you see extending past the zig zag chipboard cover.  I want to keep that page just as it is because it acts as part of the front of the book.

By working on the first page separately, I was able to keep the printed side of the inside cover page clean.  So, now that my page is completed, I can adhere the two pages together.  This will not only cover the blank white side of the papers, but strengthen the page.  I also rounded the outer corners.

Now that the two are glued together ...

I can punch the binding holes on the side.  

Now it is ready to insert into my book.
