Hello! Welcome back to the Blank Page Muse blog. I am featuring BPM stencils for the month of January. This is my last post for this month. It is the last chance to comment and try to win the stencil prize giveaway. More details at the end of the post.
I used the BPM Pinecones stencil on my layout. I trimmed a kraft cardstock at 5 1/2" x 4 1/4".
I positioned the stencil over the kraft panel. In my previous post, I mentioned one of the tricks that I find useful in stenciling is using a sticky mat. The sticky mat keeps the paper and stencil in place while you do your art. Another tool that I find useful on stenciling is a rotating platform. My sticky mat fits perfectly on the platform which made it more functional for me. Instead of lifting the stencil and the panel off the craft surface to work on another area of the project, I just rotate the platform to get closer to the area I want to work. It made me avoid resting my hand on the project while working on it preventing a mess which can happen when working with wet paint or paste. You can see a snippet of this rotating platform on one of the photos below.
I covered the open areas that I don't want ink on with paper tape.
I worked on the leaves first, blending ink over it. I did not mask the pine cone since I used a narrow brush. Feel free to use masking paper if you feel you won't be able isolate the color to a certain area.
There is a tight space in between the pine cones that needs to be inked with green. I used a narrower brush to blend ink to this area so I don't have to mask the surrounding open spaces. Again, if you prefer to mask, go ahead.
I applied a dark brown ink on the branches. I applied a light brown ink to the pine cones.
Above is the reveal after inking on a stencil. You can actually stop here but I am doing mixed media today.
Using a soft spatula, I applied gold glitter gel to the pine cone. My glitter gel slightly solidified. I added a couple of spritz of water and mixed it up to loosen it.
After I wiped off the excess gold glitter from the spatula, I scooped some green glitter gel and applied this to the leaves.
It looks like a mess at this point.
And now, the glitter reveal. I set this aside to dry.
Once the glitter glue has dried up, I blended brown ink on the edges of the panel. The glitter resisted the ink.
The inked edges made the stenciled images pop.
I flicked white paint on the panel. I use a dirty box when I do this technique to keep my craft space clear of ink splatters.
I tap the brush with my finger to create the splatters.
I missed a portion in between the cones. I placed the stencil over the panel, lining the stencil with the image on the panel. Easy peasy!
This is how the platform served its purpose for me. I just rotate the platform so I can apply the glitter to the areas I want to apply the gel to.
I inked over the pinecones to give the pinecones some body.
