Watercolored Panel


Hello! Welcome back to the BPM blog. Today's project features 3 products from Blank Page Muse:


I trimmed a Strathmore Bristol paper into a 5" x 6" panel. 


I adhered the rubber stamp to the stamp positioner using a washable glue stick. 


I inked the rubber stamp with a Versafine Onyx Black ink which is a watercolor friendly ink.


I lightly pressed the rubber stamp to the watercolor paper. The great thing about using a stamp positioner is I can restamp the image again. 


This is how the image looks when stamped. Isn't she gorgeous?


I dry the ink of the stamped image by heat setting it before adding more watercolor to it.


I used different ink mediums on this project. On the hair, I used Tim Holtz Distress Stains in Rusty Hinge and Ground Espresso colors. You don't need a lot when using these mediums. You can also use a dry brush to apply the color. But if you want a lighter shade, dip the brush in water and/or add drop/s of water to the ink.


When I color, I usually start with the lighter shade and work my way using the darker shade. It is usually easier to add more pigment to an area being colored but water reactive inks are very forgiving. Just add more water to the area that you want to re-do, pick the pigment with a dry paper towel, then start all over again. 

If you noticed, I left areas without color. This will add hightlights to the hair, making it more realistic.


I used a metallic gold watercolor on the dress trim. 


Before I start a project, I usually search the web for ideas on color themes. I went with a rainbow gown for a unique look. I used Gansai Tambi watercolor from here on. I used a pearlescent watercolor ink on the wings. 


Time to work on the background. I taped the panel to a hard board to limit the warping that can happen when I start adding water and inks to the paper. I used an artist's tape but a masking tape will do. Lessen the stickiness of the masking tape by sticking it to your skin and/or your clothing then lift and re-stick it several times. This step will prevent tearing the surface of the paper when you start peeling off the tape after watercoloring the panel.


I switched to a flat brush so I can just paint the background evenly. 


I carefully added watercolor to the area close to the image. I don't want to re-activate the colors on the dress. If you are not comfortable doing this, you can create a mask or use a masking fluid. I used a round brush to paint the areas close to the girl image.


I dry the watercolor in between layering the watercolor. 


I used a round brush so I can create a ground for the image. This is just my preference and you don't have to do it. I just don't like my images floating.


I heat set the wet watercolor to speed dry it.


When I started this project, I only planned to use the girl stamp. Sometimes as you work on a project, ideas come. Here, I am inking the background image with a Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Vintage Photo.


I stamped around the girl image to create a text background. I did not use an acrylic block which is a great thing about using rubber stamps.


I used the stencil to add more layers to the panel. I used the holes of the stencil to add dots to the panel. I used another Tim Holtz Distress Spray Stain in Victorian Velvet.


I continued to move the stencil and kept adding dots of color.


Some of the ink seeped underneath the stencil. I used a paper towel to absorb the excess ink.


I used a white gel pen to accent the eyes. 


I used a black glaze pen to accent the dots on the wings.

Girlfriends Art Journal-Summer

Hello! I apologize for a very late post as we are closing up this month's summer theme here in the blog. Believe me when I say that when this post was written it was very hot. 

Welcome back to the BPM blog. It is definitely summer as it is very hot here in the Midwest US. And since it is summer, the Blank Page Muse DT is creating projects related to summer for the month of August. Summer is a season when friends get together. My double paged art journal is all about this.



The stamp I used on this layout is the Blank Page Muse Just Us Girls Line Figure Art Rubber Stamp Sheet. This stamp set, when purchased, comes as a single sheet with all the images on it. I cut the images apart leaving a small border around it. This helps approximate the area needed to stamp the image avoiding the use of a stamp positioner. Of course, you can use a stamp positioner if you prefer to.



I adhered the stamp on a stamping block using a washable glue. The washable glue provides the right amount of tackiness to keep the rubber stamp stucked to the stamping block. Since it is washable, it comes off very easy by just wiping the glue off with a damp rag.




I stamped the images on my re-purposed planner. Despite using a dye ink in stamping the images and heat setting this to dry the ink, I still had some smearing on some parts of the images. I tried to cover this up with the coloring. 



I colored the images with Prismacolor color pencils. I used metallic pens on some parts of the images. 


To fill the background, I used the Blank Page Muse Blocks Pattern Stencil. I layed the stencil on the double paged art journal. I covered the stamped images with scrap paper to protect it from being inked.




I scribbled Tim Holtz Distress crayons on the openings of the stencils, alternating the colors. I used a waterbrush to spread the color. Initially, I used the stencil to create a perfect block shape but I realized that I was mixing the colors. I resorted to free painting the blob of crayon with the waterbrush to create it into a block shape.


I continued doing this until most of the double spread is covered with color blocks.


I stamped the word girlfriends all over the page, sometimes using the second generation ink for some variation.

A Winged Just Us Girls Stamp ~ WINGS Art Journal Page

Hello! Welcome back to the BPM blog. Today's post is my second entry to my art journal. If you are curious on my first entry, please check the post, Repurposing An Old Planner-Sunflower Beatiful Botanicals. 

I used the following products from Blank Page Muse:

I positioned the girl stamp set on my repurposed planner. I applied adhesive to the back of the rubber stamp using a washable adhesive glue stick. I picked the stamp with a stamp positioner. The one I used is by Fiskars. I inked the stamp and positoned the stamp positioner with the stamp over the page. I pressed the stamp positioner to the page to transfer the image to the page planner.


I restamped the image on a sticky note and fussy cut it to create a mask. If I am going to redo this step, I will use a masking paper instead of a sticky note. The masking paper is thinner than the sticky note. With the thin masking paper, the intricate wing image where it meets the girl image will all be transferred to the page planner.


To stamp the wings, I used a different stamp positioner, the Stamp-a-ma-jig, as seen in the previous photo. I stamped the wings on a transparent sheet first to give me an idea where I want the wings to be stamped. After which, I adhered the wings rubber stamp to an acrylic block using a washable glue stick. Without removing the stamp positioner, I removed the transparent film, butted the acrylic block to the stamp positioner, and stamped the image to the page planner.


I used au unused white board eraser to apply extra and equal pressure to the inked rubber stamp. This just ensures the inked image will transfer to the page planner. The white board eraser is the same as the stamp press that you can buy in the market. Just less fancy.


I inverted the wings by mistake when I stamped it, but I like it this way. It reminded me of the models in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Shows. 


I colored the image with Copic markers. If you notice the red plastic, this is a used plastic binder divider which I placed on the back of the sheet I am coloring. This prevents transferring ink from the page I am coloring to the next page since I am not sure how much ink the page sheet can hold.


True enough, the paper does not hold a lot of ink. You will notice some ink bleeding on the girl image's left arm. I used the Copic 0 to push the dark brown ink back to the girl's brown shirt. Next time, I will let the ink dry before coloring with another color group.


I colored the wings with a clear shimmer pen. It is hard to appreciate this in the above photo but you can see the shimmer in the last photo. I added accents to the wings using gel pens.


After I wrote my quote using an acrylic marker, I shaded the blank areas with a brown dye ink. I was also trying to cover up the ink boo-boo I made near the right leg of the girl.
