Sunflower Texture Surprise: Using a 'Wet Cement' Stamp in a Whole New Way

Sunflower Texture Surprise: Using a 'Wet Cement' Stamp in a Whole New Way

Good day, fellow crafters. It's Tamara once again, with a new post showcasing my latest card created using  Blank Page Muse products!  I was having so much fun with their great flower-themed products that I decided to create with them again for this post.

When you think of a sunflower, the last thing that comes to mind is a "wet cement" texture—but that unexpected pairing is exactly what gave this card its unique charm. I used a stamp originally designed to mimic the look of wet cement to add subtle texture to the sunflower’s center and background. While the stamp doesn’t add dimension, it introduces a layer of visual interest that makes the design feel more organic and detailed. This kind of creative twist shows how a stamp’s purpose isn’t limited to its label—sometimes the best results come from using tools in unexpected ways. Keep reading to see how this simple texture stamp added interest in all the right places.

To create this project, you will need the following:

  • Sunflower & Dragonflies stencil from Blank Page Muse
  • Texture Wet Cement stamp from Blank Page Muse
  • White cardstock panel - 4.25" x 5.5"
  • White A2 Card base
  • Inks in Green, Yellow, Caramel,  Blue
  • Ink Blending brush
  • Clear block for mounting stamp
  • Low-tack adhesive
  • Frame stencil (I chose one from my stash that has both the frame and the cut-out)
  • Scissors
  • Liquid glue
  • Paper Trimmer
  • Sentiment of choice (I chose an uplifting one from my stash)
  • Flat-back pearls (optional)

Process

  • Place the white cardstock on the work surface and then secure the Sunflower and Dragonflies stencil over it, positioning it so as much of the sunflower is on the stencil as possible, then secure in place with mint tape or similar. I also put some mint tape in for masking between the flower and the greenery to make ink blending cleaner.
  • Use the ink blending brush and the green inks to color the stem and leaves. Begin with the a lighter green for the base then apply a darker green to build up the visual dimension. Be gentle with the dark green as to not cover up all of the lighter under tones.
  • Reposition the masking tape so that it covers the green.
  • Using inks in shades of yellow, and beginning with the lighter shade, ink-blend the sunflower petals and the center.
  • Once the petals are completed, use a darker shade of the yellow, I chose a more yellowish-orange shade, and ink-blend the flower center.
  • Blend this color into the petals to make them pop; be sure to leave some of the lighter tone visible.
  • When complete, return with a darker shade of yellow or a bit of orange (your preference) for the flower center.

  • Make sure to not remove the stencil, it is important for what comes next.
  • Use the low-tack adhesive on the back of the Wet Cement stamp, and secure it to the glass block.
  • Ink the stamp with the Caramel colored ink and then stamp over the stenciled image.  This will give a very unique visual texture that makes this card stand out. Repeat until satisfied with the coverage.
  • This is reminiscent of a splatter technique, but with the stamp, it is more organized in the execution.
  • Allow the inks to dry fully.
  • Remove the stencil and clean.

  • Using the frame of preference, I chose one from my stash that had both the frame and its interior cut out so that I could ink-blend with a shade of light Blue around the scalloped interior cut to mimic a clear blue sky.
  • Use a darker shade of blue along the edges of the cardstock with only a light pressure on the edges of the stencil.
  • Allow the ink to dry.
  • Remove the stencil and clean.

Assembly

  • Using liquid glue, secure your completed panel to the White A2 card base and allow to dry.
  • Use Black ink and the sentiment of your choice to create the sentiment.  For this design, I found the lower end of the card was a perfect location.
  • Using liquid glue, adhere flat-back pearls to the panel to give it some dimension.

Embossing Paste and Glitter Glue on Stencil ~ Beauty in Botanicals

Hello! Today's project is about adding texture to your projects using embossing paste and glitter glue on stencil. There are a lot of mediums available and it can be pretty overwhelming. In this post, I will be discussing how to customize the embossing paste and glitter glue to fit your project.

I used the new Blank Page Muse Sunflower and Dragonflies Stencil on this project.

I created a background panel first. On a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" white cardstock, I applied ink using a brayer. I picked the ink with the brayer then transferred the ink to the paper. If you don't have a brayer, an alternative is to apply the ink directly from the ink pad to the paper.

I suggest moving the brayer to one direction, either forward or backward instead of going back and forth. This is just a personal preference. Feel free to do otherwise.

I layered two shades of brown ink on the panel using the brayer.

Since I used a water reactive ink, I set the panel aside to dry. You can also heat set it to speed dry it.

I adhered some non-tacky tapes on the back of the panel with the sticky side up. I positioned the stencil over the panel and pressed the stencil to the tape. This kept the stencil in place when I applied the medium. I used a white embossing paste which I customized by mixing it with brown ink to fill in the center of the sunflower. I used a brown colored reinker for this. You can also use an ink pad or a marker to color the white paste. Just dab the ink pad or scribble the marker onto your work surface and mix this with the white paste.

You can definitely mask the areas of the flower to prevent contamination of colors. I did not. I just made sure to be careful in applying my colored medium.

I was also dabbing the medium on the openings to make sure that the hole is covered with medium. I did not smoothen this out since I am working with different colors and different mediums.

I sprinkled black glitter to the embossing paste while it was wet. I end up modifying this later.

When working with different colors of embossing paste or glitter glue, you have stop and pause in between colors to allow the medium to dry. It is also very important to clean the stencil and the applicator in between colors. I sprayed my supplies with water before wiping off the excess glue with a paper towel or rag. We don't want that washed out and clogging our drain.

If the medium still won't come off, just soak the stencil and the applicator on warm soapy water. Use your fingers to loosen the glue. I do not recommend using a brush since this can damage the stencil especially if the stencil has some dainty parts.

Before I worked on adding medium to the petals, I added tape to the front of the stencil to guide the alignment of the paper panel. For each medium application, I simply align the panel to these guides.

For the petals, I used a gold glitter paste. To mute the gold color, I mixed a drop of a dark yellow reinker to the glitter glue and mixed it before applying it to the flower petals.

I worked on the leaves after the petals. I also mixed a green ink from a reinker to the green glitter glue.

I applied brown medium to the stem which I modified later on.

I applied another layer of brown colored medium to the floral center so I can add more black glitter powder to it.

I poured black glitter to the medium while it is wet. I set this aside to dry. Unfortunately, not all of the glitter stayed adhered to the medium. I should have patted the glitter to the medium to make the glitter stick to the medium.

I did not like the look of the brown stem with the green leaf.

I mixed up another green medium and applied this over the dried brown medium to cover it up. This is what I call a make or brake step since this is when it can either go right or go wrong.

The embossing paste did look green until it dried.

I die cut a postage frame on a black cardstock. I die cut the floral panel using a rectangle die slightly larger than the inner postage frame. I think the embossing paste has not dried yet that's why it got squished when I ran it through my die cut machine. I should have used a craft knife instead but too late for that. We learn from our boo-boos anyway.

I ripped a pre-printed vellum for the sentiment. The ripped edge added texture to the panel. I ran the vellum through a sticker maker to add adhesive to the back. I adhered this to the panel.

I hope you like today's project. I encouraged you to use those lovely colored mediums on your stencils.

Have a blessed, brilliant and creative day!

Art Journal - Nature's Art

Hello BPM Fans! It's Betty here! My favorite season of the year is Spring. I love how the trees are bare one week then full of leaves the next, the smell of fresh cut grass, and the sound of birds chirping. My husband and I walk every morning and it's been a delight to see all the different flowers blooming everywhere. This inspired me to create my art journal pages called Nature's Art using stamps from Blank Page Muse Art Rubber Stamps (please see supplies list below for list).

This is the perfect project to make for the BPM monthly challenge for a chance to win a prize! The theme for April is "nature." Here is the link to the challenge: CHALLENGE.

Supplies:
  • Blank Page Muse Art Rubber Stamps:
  • Stamping block
  • Washi tape, wax paper, Press and Seal (to protect coils, margins, and other pages)
  • White gesso
  • Paint brush
  • Distress Spray inks: Bundled Sage, Salty Ocean, Chipped Sapphire, Seedless Preserves, and Picket Fence
  • Water spray bottle
  • Heat gun (optional)
  • Floral patterned paper of choice
  • White cardstock for stamping images
  • Coloring medium of choice. I used both Prismacolor pencils and Copic markers
  • Scissors
  • Black cardstock
  • Alphabet dies
  • Press and Seal or Transfer tape
  • Liquid glue
  • Distress ink pad: Black Soot
  • Distress ink blender brush/pad
  • Water dropper
  • Collage Medium (I used Tim Holtz Distress Collage Medium)
  • Sentiment stickers (I used Tim Holtz - Small Talk stickers)
Instructions:
  • Prepare the art journal pages by covering the coils with Press and Seal and the margins with washi tape. Add wax paper under the pages.

  • Paint on a layer of gesso and let it completely dry.

  • Place the journal into a box so the over spray is contained in the box.
  • Spray the Distress Ink onto the pages, but don't overlap too much. Spray water over the ink so the ink will spread. Gently use a paper towel to mop up puddles.  Use a heat gun to quick dry or air dry.

  • Using the Background Grunge stamps, randomly stamp images using a stamp block or without. The entire image of the stamp does not have to stamp to create the background. Select a variety of stamps from the set to use.

  • Tear patterned paper corners and adhere using collage medium.
  • Stamp and color the butterfly, sunflower (stamp partial or cut flowers in half since they will be placed on edge of journal page), and dragonfly stamps then fussy cut. Use any colors you like, but here's what I used:
    • Butterfly (Copic markers): Y17, B02, RV02
    • Dragonfly (Copic markers): YG11, BV00, BV01
    • Sunflower (Copic markers): Y17, Y35, Y13, E33
  • Stamp and color the Girl with Basket of Flowers. Use any colors you like. Here are my Prismacolor pencil colors:
    • Skin: 116, 018, 019, 020
    • Cheeks: 082
    • Hair: 117, 114, 010

    • Grass: 057, 110, 061
    • Sky: 101
    • Walkway: 065
  • Stamp and color the Dragonfly Lady. Use any colors you like. Here are my Copic colors:
    • Hair: E39, YR27, YR24, Y32
    • Skin: E04, E11, E21, E00, E000
    • Cheeks: R20
    • Lips: R21
    • Dragonflies: YG11, BV00, BV01
    • Stars: Y24, Y11, Y15
    • Blue background: B00, B000
    • Bubbles: Y00, B000, BV000; plus Castle Arts colored pencil #35 lavender light.
  • Using the Distress Ink in Black Soot, ink the edges of each image. Set aside.
  • Using alphabet dies and black cardstock, cut out the words "nature's art."
  • Using a self-healing mat or surface with grid lines, add a line of removable adhesive onto the mat. Line up the die cuts onto the mat and place a piece of transfer tape or Press and Seal on top to pick up all the letters at once. Use a spatula to help lift the die cuts off the mat.

  • Add liquid glue to the die cuts the place them onto your journal pages.

  • Carefully peel off the transfer tape or Press and Seal.
  • Using the end of the water spray pump, add a few big drops of water onto the journal pages for some texture (optional - this was a last minute, spur of the moment idea).

  • Adhere all the images onto the journal pages using collage medium. Add the sentiment stickers.
  • Lastly, apply a light coat of collage medium all over the pages.
The art journal page is complete! This was a really fun project to do. Give it a try!

Thank you for stopping by and have a very creative week! ~Betty~
