Faux Steampunk

Hello! Welcome back to the BPM blog. The design team is almost done with this month's optional steampunk theme. This is a theme I struggle with. I don't have a craft item with this theme so I tried to make my projects for this month sort of steampunk. For this card, I added metallic elements which gave it a steampunk feel.

The Blank Page Muse products I used on this card are:
I worked on the background panel first. I looked through my stash of cardstock and patterned paper and pulled out the papers with neutral colors, mostly brown. I added green to complement the green patterned paper die cut. I used a die to cut the papers into small rectangles.

I arranged the die cuts and adhered these die cuts to a scrap white cardstock cut at 4 1/4" x 5 1/2". Initially, I used a tape runner. I later on changed to a liquid adhesive. The liquid adhesive is more forgiving. It gave me time to reposition the die cut since the liquid glue took more time to dry compared to a tape runner.

I made sure that the die cuts are butted to each other. I also made sure that no alike rectangle die cuts are next to each other.

After the glue has dried, I snipped off the excess on the sides. I positioned the stencil on top of the background panel. I temporarily adhered the paper to the stencil using a non-tacky tape by placing some it on the back of the cardstock panel. Half of the sticky part was showing. I adhered the stencil to the tape. This prevents the stencil from shifting while I apply paste over the stencil.

I used the Ranger Simon Hurley Cookie Dough Lunar Paste. I used a spatula at first in applying the paste. I later on switched to a scraper to smoothen the paste and make sure all the open areas of the stencil have paste on it. I set this aside to dry.

Make sure to clean your stencil immediately after using it. You can either remove the paste with a wipe or you can soak it on warm, soapy water. Be gentle when cleaning the stencil so you don't accidentally break off any intricate parts of the stencil. (Ask me how I know? 😊) I use my fingers to clean delicate parts of a stencil. After I wash my stencils, I hang this to dry except if I have to use it right away. If that's the case, I pat the stencil dry with a clean rag.

I prepped a gold cardstock with anti-static tool before stamping the flower to it.

I used Versafine Onyx Black ink to stamp the image.

I poured glittered black embossing powder over the ink.

I heat embossed the powder until it has melted.

Isn't that gorgeous?

I stamped the flowers using a gold pigment ink and a rose gold pigment ink. Looks like my gold ink pad needs reinking. Anyway, I poured color coordinating embossing powders to the flower portion of the stamp only. I brushed off the powder that's not on the flower. I heat set the powder until it has melted.

I fussy cut the images leaving a small border around it.

I created a frame using two nesting dies on the same gold cardstock I used for the flower.

I arranged the flowers and the frame on the panel. To maintain this arrangement, I picked it up with a Glad Press 'N Seal.

I carefully flipped the Press 'N Seal. I applied foam adhesive to the frame. I removed the release paper with the help of a craft knife.

I applied dots of glue to the back of the cut up flowers and the adhesive foam.

I carefully flipped back the arrangement to the panel and removed the Press 'N Seal. The glue was very helpful in giving me some wiggle time to arrange these elements on my panel before permanently adhering it. Once I was happy with the arrangement, I press the flowers and frame to the panel.

I added a metal staple to the floral arrangement and some gold gems to the panel.

I hope you like today's project. This card may not be a real steampunk for it lacks the gears to make it a true steampunk. The metallic add ons hopefully makes this card close enough to being steampunk.
