Rotating Stencil to Create Background & a Giveaway

Hello! Welcome back to the BPM blog. I am featuring BPM stencils for the month of January. This is my second post this month. For today's card, I am doing a technique in which you rotate the stencil to create a unique background. This card also shows how the images on the stencil can be overlapped with each other.

I used the medium sized BPM Monstera Leaves with Borders stencil. There is a larger stencil if you prefer that.

One of the tricks in stenciling that I find useful is using a sticky mat to keep the paper and stencil from moving. If you don't have a sticky mat, using a tacky tape will also do. I use a paper tape to cover the open areas of the stencil that I don't want to blend ink to. I started with blending ink over the pebble-like openings of the stencil. I used a light hand in applying the ink. You can actually skip this step since the inked pebbles are hardly noticeable at the end. I just had this done so the panel has full coverage in case  there will be bare areas.

I moved the stencil up the panel to continue creating the background. I rotated the stencil 180 degrees to add some variation to the pattern. The great thing about using a stencil, aside from rotating to create a different design, you can also flip it for a mirror image.

The above photo is the first background pattern I created using the border portion of the stencil. I used a light gray ink.

I positioned the leaves on the center of the panel.

I applied ink on the stencil very lightly. Remember, it is easier to add more ink than remove ink once it is already on your paper.

I went heavy with the ink on the centers of the leaves. Another option is to use a smaller tip brush to add details to the leaf.

I moved the stencil around and continued blending ink over the stencil. Since I used all green inks, I did not wipe off the stencil in between inks. I did not even clean up my brending blush. But I did go from lightest to darkest so I don't contaminate the light green ink with the dark green ink.

To clean the stencil, I spritz water over it and gently wipe it off with a dry rag.

I forgot to take a photo of the finished background panel before die cutting it. Hopefully, you get the idea of how it looks like uncut.

I die cut the sentiment on the stenciled background. My die sentiments cut a shadow which allowed me to add an outline effect on the die cut sentiment. BPM does not sell sentiment dies so feel free to substitute this with what you have in your stash or you can simply stamp a sentiment on the background.

On the black matte cardstock, I swiped a sticky ink on the part where the negative cut of the sentiment will line up. I brushed pearl powder to the sticky ink to add shimmer which showed through the spaces around the sentiment.

I also die cut additional scrap white cardstock with the sentiment die. I stacked this for some dimension.

I hope you like today's project. I also have an old post discussing several ways to use a stencil: Creative Ways of Using a Stencil in case you are interested to learn other ways of using a stencil.

This is the second giveaway post. I am giving away a set of BPM stencils that was sent as extra to me by BPM's lovely owner, Kim (Thank you, Kim!). She agreed for me to offer it as a giveaway. To be eligible for the prize, go to my blog and leave a comment. To increase your chances of winning, please comment on my other BPM posts for January with the word 'Giveaway' on the blog title. There should be 3 posts total. Commenting ends on January 31, 11:59pm CST. A random winner will be selected from all posts and will be anounced on my BPM post on February 8.

Have a blessed, brilliant and creative day!

Cosmic Shimmer Airless Spray Meadow Moss
Master Board made with scrap paper on Watercolor paper
Thanks Die
Sunflower leaf die

Create a master board. Use watercolor paper or other mixed media paper for the base.  Glue scraps of paper to the base.  Be sure all edges are secure. Then spray with Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Spray Gathered Twigs and Cosmic Shimmer Airless Spray Meadow Moss.

When the spray is dry stencil with the Leaves Collage from Blank Page Muse. The stenciling is done with Lunar Paste Refined Copper on the master board.

I got out a couple of dies and my mini scout die cutting machine.

Die cut Thanks! The thanks was cut from one of the digital pumpkins, then layered on a brown cardstock shadow.

I die cut leaf and from a couple of the tags from the digital collection.

Fussy cut images you decide to use. I like to cut too many pieces than not enough for a card then I have choices. Once I start fussy cutting I cannot stop.

After all the images are fussy cut, distress with Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Spray Gathered Twigs, then you are ready to adhere images.   Even embellish the inside of the card too.

A fussy cut large sunflower and pumpkin with a couple of die cut leaves are inside this card.

On the front of the card there is a fussy cut tag at the bottom of the card. At the bottom of the card I added a strip of adhesive paper lace.  A dress was adhered with dimensional foam. The dress is surrounded by a couple of pumpkins, three different sizes of sunflowers, and a die cut leaf. Then the thanks was added to the front of the dress.

Finally, a few gems were randomly glued for a little bling!
Hope you enjoyed this card.

Colorful Blooms Grow Here ~ Beauty in Botanicals

Hi, friends!  It's design team Walter here on the blog with you today with my second card for the Beauty in Botanicals theme.  Botanicals, blooms, and nature itself are all filled with lots of amazing color as well as rich, deep tones.  I wanted to craft a project that celebrated both the rich deepness of the earth and bold color of blooms to illustrate that juxtaposition of the soil that breathes life and florals that give their thanks by beautifully blooming.  I think that I was able to achieve that.  What do you think?

Here's what I used to create it:
Here's how I made it:

I started by stenciling the leaves onto the cream card panel with the Polishing Plaster.  Polishing Paster is a wonderful medium full of color and sparkle.  You may substitute grit paste for it if you don't have Polishing Plaster; however, it won't have the same sparkle.  I aligned the stencil and used a palette knife to spread the Polishing Plaster over it.

I used a heat tool to speed up the drying process.  Once dry, I spritzed the card panel with some Apricot Tea Stain Spray to age it a bit and then ran Antique Linen Distress Ink around the edges.  I then applied craft glue to the back of the burlap strip, wrapped it around the card panel and secured the end pieces of the strip on the back of the card panel.

Double sided foam tape strips were placed on the back of the card panel and the panel was adhered to the card base.

It was now time to stamp the flowers and sentiment.  I stamped them with the Fallen Leaves ink.  I cut the sentiment strip and blended Antique Linen Distress ink over the front of it.  I colored the florals by ink blending Wildberry ink at the top, moved into Watermelon ink, and then blended it all together with some Creamsicle ink.  I fussy cut the florals and used craft glue to adhere them in place on the burlap.  I glued the strip of lace over the florals and onto the burlap with craft glue and then used double sided foam tape strips to put the sentiment in place.  Three clear acrylic bubbles were added and the card was done!

Bright flowers bloom up from the earth (burlap) and provide the color to the rich earth tones that provide life.  The lace adds a light touch of beauty to it.

I hope that you enjoyed reading about my design, the symbolism of it, and how it came to life.  I'll see you here again soon.  Until then . . . be well!
