Faux Steampunk

Hello! Welcome back to the BPM blog. We are doing a steampunk theme for the month of September. I don't have any steampunk themed BPM stamps. So, I got to make the most of what I have. I used the hummingbird from the Blank Page Muse You Make Me Happy Clear Stamp Set on this card and make it steampunk looking by giving it a distressed look.

I stamped the hummingbird on a vintage patterned paper using Versamark ink. I prepped the area with an anti-static tool before stamping the bird to prevent any of the embossing powder from clinging to areas that I don't want it to cling.

I poured metallic gold embossing powder to the sticky ink. This is one way of achieving a steampunk look, add metallic elements to your project.

I heat embossed the powder until it has melted.

I colored the bird with metallic inks.

If you get a blob of ink on your image, use the corner of a paper towel and place it next to the blob of ink. The ink moves to the dry paper towel and away from the image. I set the colored bird aside to allow the ink to dry. I did not want to dry it with a heat gun for this might melt the already set embossing powder.

I fussy cut the bird. I cut it close to the embossed line.

I created the background panel of the card using a cut apart paper from the same vintage paper pad I used for the bird. I punched the edges using a postage edge punch. I blended brown inks to some of these punched pieces and adhered it to a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" patterned paper.

I splattered metallic paint to this panel. I inked the edges of the card panel with a black dye ink. I die cut a thin rectangle frame on gold metallic paper. I die cut a rectangle with a deckled edge on the same gold cardstock. I embossed this piece with a bubble wrap embossing folder. I lightly swiped the black dye ink on the raised areas of this piece. I heat set the ink to dry it. I gently rubbed a sand block over the raised areas for added distress look.

I adhered the frame, the embossed piece and the bird to the panel.

I added metallic eyelets to the corners of the frame.

I hope you like today's project and that it gave you an idea on how to create a steampunk out of non-steampunk craft products.
